Slip rings in motors are devices that transport power, electrical signals, or data between a fixed component and a revolving component. They are also known as electric swivels, rotary electrical couplings, and collector rings. A slip ring's design will depend on how it will be used; for example, a slip ring used to transmit data has to have a greater bandwidth and better EMI (electromagnetic interference) mitigation than one used to transfer power. However, slip rings generally consist of a spinning ring and fixed brushes.

It would be conceivable to employ spools with enough cable length and rotating speed to accommodate the needed revolutions if the rotation of one component requires a fixed number of them, however cable management in this arrangement can be extremely challenging. However, it is sometimes impractical or unreliable to use cables to carry signals between rotating and stationary components if one of the components spins continually.
