A carbon brush is a part that helps a motor's stationary and spinning components transfer electrical current. In a generator or motor, the fixed carbon brush rides on the rotating commutator, which allows electricity to flow and completes a circuit.

Paste History

In the beginning, brushes were made of wire and resembled regular wire brushes. However, the wire brushes frequently caused the commutator to wear out and had other run-time problems. Brushes made possible by the use of graphite enabled a more even distribution of current between commutator segments. Carbon brushes made of graphite last longer and save the commutator. Furthermore, the graphite is often made to fit the application and may have particular additives that can help lubricate the connection.

There are four basic types of carbon brushes: carbon graphite, electrographitic graphite, graphite, and metal graphite. The needs of the motor or generator and the operational environment are taken into account while selecting the material types. Dimensions, bevels, seats, shunts and terminals, plates and hard tops, and other unique characteristics are used to customise brushes. On our website, Repco offers a fantastic carbon brush reference, and of course, we're always delighted to answer inquiries via phone or email.
