I believe your question was if a motor could operate with a SLIP RING. Yes, it can.

An induction motor known as a "SLIP RING IN MOTOR" has slip rings connecting the rotor windings to an external resistance. The resistance may be changed to modify the motor's speed/torque characteristics. By adding high resistance to the rotor circuit, wound-rotor motors may be started with little inrush current; as the motor gains speed, the resistance can be reduced.

The rotor of the slip ring motor has more winding turns than a squirrel cage induction motor; as a result, the induced voltage is greater and the current is lower than for a squirrel-cage rotor. A standard rotor has 3 poles attached to the slip ring during startup. A variable power resistor is linked in series with each pole. The rotor poles are switched to short circuit when the motor achieves its maximum speed. The resistors weaken the field at the stator during startup. The inrush current is thus decreased. Higher beginning torque is a significant benefit over squirrel-cage motors.

There are numerous different types of changeable speed drives that employ wound-rotor motors. A large speed range with excellent energy efficiency is made possible by some types of variable-speed drives by recovering slip-frequency power from the rotor circuit and feeding it back to the supply.
